German solution to solve water crisis

Indian-German water partnership summit jointly organised by the city corporation
KOCHI: At a time when the city and its outskirts are facing unprecedented water scarcity, the Indian-German water partnership summit jointly organised by the city corporation and SCMS in partnership with German expert agencies has proposed modern German technologies to resolve the crisis. The summit on the theme ‘German solutions to Indian Challenges’ was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Monday.
The summit, jointly organised by the Centre for Sustainable Water Technology and Management (CSWTM) and Kochi Corporation, at SCMS School of Engineering and Technology, in association with German Water Partnership (GWP), focused on conservation and management of water sources.
Panel discussions were held on topics including protection of local water sources – sustainable solutions for municipal waste water and storm water management, monitoring domestic water supply quality – challenges for urban and rural areas, industrial water and waste water treatment.
The members of GWP, a consortium of 350 German organisations, have decided to collaborate with CSWTM with the objective of resolving water related problems in the State by adapting German technologies to the Kerala situation.
“Our objective is to finetune the high-end expensive German technology for water conservation, re-use and waste water treatment to make it suitable to the State’s specific climatic conditions. Latest technologies like electro dialysis can be used by which saline water can be purified to drinking water,” said Dr Sunny George, director of CSWTM.
Dr G.P.C. Nayar, chairman of SCMS Group, Jorn Rhode, Consul General of Germany in Bengaluru, Mayor Tony Chammany, Ms Christine Von Lonski, Director of GWP, and Prof M. Madhavan, Principal of SCMS School of Engineering and Technology, attended the inaugural function.
