Hubli: Upset at the many animals dying in accidents on the roads in the Western Ghats in the dark of the night, a 13- year -old tribal student, Manjunath Meti has come out with a mechanism to avert such mishaps and in the process walked away with the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) award presented by the Union government.
Aware that animals are often killed by vehicles in the Kappatta Hills, Manjunath, who is a class VII student of a higher primary school in Mundawad village, decided to do something about it.
The young genius has also come up with signal lights to be installed every 100 meters on the roadsides and two silver plates for every 50 meters, connected to the signal lights on the curved and narrow stretches of the road. If hit by a vehicle, the silver plates will light the signal for a second, alerting the oncoming vehicle and making it more cautious in its approach.
"Drivers have a difficult time negotiating the narrow and curved roads in the hills and forests. This mechanism can help prevent accidents in the ghat section as the signal light placed strategically on the roadsides can alert vehicles about oncoming cars or lorries," Manjunath explains.
He plans to exhibit his model which he has made from LED bulbs, a battery, pipe, silver plates and other material at an event scheduled to be held from October 6 to 8 at the ITPO Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
