Schools in Telangana lack amenities

About 60 per cent of all schools have benches and chairs among other
Hyderabad: Even in this day and age, four out of 10 state-run schools in Telangana and AP do not have furniture. According to data put out by the Union HRD ministry, only about 60 per cent of all schools have benches and chairs among other.
Just about 28 per cent of schools in the two states have computers, but a third of them remain dysfunctional. Almost 90 per cent of schools don’t have science or computer labs.
The state-wise secondary school report card, recently released by the National University of Education Planning and Administration under the HRD ministry for 2013-14, showed that even Andaman and Nicobar Islands has more number of schools with computers and internet connectivity than those in AP and Telangana.
“We are trying to route funds from various schemes and other departments. It is an issue that is always swept under the carpet because the government’s attitude has been that students and teachers are enough to constitute a school,” a senior Telangana school education department official said.
In the AP Budget for this financial year, the budget for school education was about Rs 11,000 crore, almost all of which goes to salaries of teachers and maintenance.
