MPs, MLAs launch campaign to get 1 lakh signatures

Chennai: Protests and fasts continued in Tamil Nadu on Sunday over the jailing of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa in the disporportionate assets case with bus services being suspended in many districts on Sunday.

Protests by AIADMK workers and Jayalalithaa supporters continued with some of them conducting special prayers in temples for the speedy release of their leader. Around 100 members of the AIADMK women's wing led by minister Gokula Indira even carried clay pots filled with burning sticks (thee chatti) at the Ponniamman temple in Kilpauk for speedy release of their leader.

AIADMK legislators and Chennai mayor S. Duraisamy wore black shirts and observed a fast at the memorial of party founder M.G. Ramachandran at the Marina beach here. In north Chennai, AIADMK presidium chairman E. Madhusudhanan inaugurated a signature campaign in support of Ms Jayalalihthaa at Villivakkam constituency.

SIDCO chairman and AIADMK minority wing deputy secretary, Villivakkam MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar, organised a mega signature campaign from the public to show the solidarity and support for the AIADMK general secretary. The campaign was inaugurated by AIADMK presidium chairman E. Madhusudhanan in the presence of district secretary T.G. Venkatesh Babu, MP, S.R. Vijaykumar, MP.

"We have distributed more than 1 lakh forms to the public in Villivakkam constituency. The form pledges support to Jayalalithaa and condemning the injustice done to Jayalalithaa," Prabhakar said. "We have planned to get 1 lakh signed forms from the public in 24 hours to show solidarity and support for AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa," he added.
