Immersion delayed as number of idols rise
An estimated 1.2 lakh Ganesh idols were immersed within 36 hours in the Hussain sagar
Hyderabad: The immersion ceremony of Durga idols which began on Friday night, at Tank Bund, went on till late Sunday evening. This was the result of the number of Durga Puja pandals, in the city, growing from less than 1,000 last year to more than 1200 this year.
In fact only eight cranes have been set up for immersion of the idols at Tank Bund. Crane operators attributed the delay to the pandal organisers who were bringing the idols to the lake at their own time, for immersion.
In contrast, an estimated 1.2 lakh Ganesh idols were immersed within 36 hours in the Hussain sagar last month, but the government had installed a large number of cranes. There is no centralised procession for Durga idols, unlike for Ganesh nimajjan.
“The work to retrieve idols and clean up the lake has already begun. We expect that this will be completed by Monday afternoon,” said an HMDA official.
