Dividers in buses irks APSRTC
It believes that segregation of passengers will leave many seats empty during peak time
Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s decision to install glass dividers in city buses to protect women passengers has put the APSRTC, already mired in losses, in a dilemma. APSRTC believes that segregation of passengers will leave many seats empty during peak time.
The APSRTC recently decided to implement the suggestion of the Poonam Mallakondiah committee’s suggestion. The first revamped APSRTC bus was rolled out a week ago. The bus has a glass divider between the male and female section segregating both sides and thereby restricting entry of men into the women’s section. The divider prevents men from using the women’s seats when empty. Women form 25-30 percent of occupants.
The move has triggered a debate among both parties. APSRTC officials have pointed out that the segregation makes no business sense for the corporation which is staring at losses worth Rs 2634 crore.
“APSRTC is already steeped in losses and this segregation will further increase loss. Will they (committee) pay for the empty seats when there are no women passengers?” asked top APSRTC official.
