Scared abductor killed Y. Karunakar
Hyderabad: The kidnapper, D. Mallikarjun, 22, walked with the 10-year-old boy for five km promising him kites. When they reached a lonely area in Meerpet, the kid started crying and said he wanted to go home. Meanwhile, his kidnap partner N. Mohan, 21, did not respond to his phone calls. So, in order to get rid of the kid, Mallikarjun strangled him and threw the body into the jungle, police said.
The police arrested Mallikarjun and Mohan, both labourers from Indiranagar, for kidnapping and killing the boy, Y. Karunakar. Police said that Mohan was involved in the planning, but not in the execution. Once the boy was kidnapped, Mohan backed off, and a panic-stricken Mallikarjun killed the boy.
As per the duo’s confession they planned to kidnap a kid for ransom, so that they can use the money for alcohol and gambling. They stole a SIM card from an autorickshaw driver to use it to make the ransom call.
On September 2, as Karunakar was walking home, Mallikarjun approached him and offered a kite. He asked him to come with him, and when the boy resisted he convinced him.
“After three hours the kid started crying and the situation got out of control. When he tried calling his partner there was no response. Meanwhile, the boy said that he would tell his parents about what happened. Mallikarjun, then killed him and abandoned the body and came home,” police said. He then tried to mislead the police by telling the boy went with a person on a bike.
The duo later called his mother Y. Umarani twice. In the second call, which was made with the stolen SIM card, the duo demanded Rs 2 lakh and asked the parents to come with money. However, thinking that the police would track the parents they did not come to collect the money. With clues from the second phone call Mallikarjun was taken into custody. He then showed the boy’s body to the police.
The victim's father Y. Prabhakar and mother Umarani are inconsolable. They expected that their kid would come back alive and were ready to pay. "But they killed my son even before asking for the ransom," said a weeping Umarani.
