Cop’s murder leaves investigators clueless

26-yr-old policeman found dead near harbour

Chennai: Nearly a week after a 26-year-old policeman in Chennai went missing and was found murdered, the city police are still groping in the dark for clues about his killers. The city police have started an intensive probe into the mysterious murder of policeman Nethran, whose body was found floating in the sea near the container yard area in the harbour last Tuesday.

The deceased policeman was attached to the armed reserve of Chennai city police and was on security duty at the US mission on Anna Salai till he mysteriously disappeared on September 28 after duty hours. He was a native of Dharmapuri. His wife and two children live in his native village while he was staying in a lodge in Triplicane.

Though initially it was believed that the policeman could have accidentally fallen into the sea and drowned, the post-mortem report confirmed that it was case of murder. The body had cut injuries on the neck, chest and hip. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.

“We have some clues. We are conducting enquiries with his friends and his other regular contacts,” said a member of the team from the Harbour police station that is probing the murder of the policeman. The police have already collected his mobile phone call details and conducted the first round of inquiries with his friends and colleagues.

“We are trying to find out his routine after duty hours. We were told that he used to go to the Marina beach during his free time. But the sequence of events on the day he went missing is still not clear. It is possible that he was supposed to meet somebody that day. We are also checking if he was into any kind of undesirable activities,” the police said.
