School kids take to weather analysis
Two school kids are part of the school brigade at Kea weather
Chennai: If ever there were a reason for students to keep track of weather bulletins, it would be to keep posted on potential ‘holidays’ due to adverse weather conditions. But while that is still the case, two school kids, involved with the Kea weather blog, are out to prove that their inclination for weather observation goes much beyond holidays.
Sudharshan M and Deepak K are part of the school brigade at Kea weather, and a conversation with them revealed the origins of their interest and how they are their classmates’ envy.
Sudharshan is a typical 14-year-old, but he will amaze people with his extraordinary knowledge on weather-related subjects. “My first steps into this field were in 2010 during Cyclone Jal that lashed Tamil Nadu. I was then in the class 5,” says the class 9 student from Padma Seshadri School, Nungambakkam.
In 2011, during the southwest monsoon season, Sudharshan was astonished to witness Chennai receive more than 75 mm of rainfall in one hour. He says, “I then picked up a few books and did my own research into the monsoon patterns. I followed it up with joining the Kea blog.” He cites his brother, who was a British Council climate champion in 2010, as his inspiration
His colleague at Kea, Deepak, is a class 10 student at MAK School, K.K. Nagar. “I came across this blog and started posting comments and photos of the clouds in my area” which fascinate him. Deepak also says that his friend Kishore, who used to come to his house to play computer games, would often be awed by his ‘passion’. “Kishore started to ask more questions about rainfall and gradually developed an interest on his own,” says Deepak says.
For blog founder Ehsan Ahmed, the involvement of these young minds in Kea weather has only added more value. “Despite studying in school, these kids are very enthusiastic and are able to spend extra time on weather-related research,” Ehsan said. “Based on my interaction with them, I feel these three bring in new inputs and fresh ideas,” he enthused.
Deepak wants to be an engineer, but then, as he says, “I will always keep an eye on the weather in my area. This will be a side activity.”
