Chennai: Dr James Maynard of Oxford University, England, and the University of Montreal, Canada, will receive this year’s Sastra Ramanujan prize.
The Sastra Ramanujan prize, established in 2005, is awarded every year to young mathematicians for their contributions in areas influenced by mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.
The prize will be awarded on Ramanujan’s birthday, December 22, at Sastra University in Kumbakonam. Dr Maynard will receive the cash award of $10,000 along with a citation and will deliver the Ramanujan birthday commemorative lecture.
Dr Maynard received his doctoral degree from Oxford University two years ago, is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Montreal, Canada, and holds a position in Oxford.
In the last two years, he obtained positive results in prime number theory, especially on the small gaps problem. Just in the last few weeks, he solved the famous problem of Paul Erdos on large gaps between primes.
This 27-year-old has taken the world of number theory by storm and the Sastra Ramanujan prize will be his first major prize in recognition of his work.
