Cow slaughter not must for Id
Islam does not say that a Muslim must sacrifice only a cow on Id-ul-Azha
Hyderabad: Islam does not say that a Muslim must sacrifice only a cow on Id-ul-Azha. It is a misconception, say Muslims clerics and scholars in the city.
Id-ul-Azha, (festival of the sacrifice) commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of submission to God. It is one of the most important festivals for the Muslims.
Muslims sacrifice cows, goats, camels, sheep and rams on Id, and donate one part of the meat to the poor. However, cow slaughter has become a controversial topic in India.
Hafez Mohammed Nadeem, who is linked to a madrasa in the city, said “It is a wrong notion that Muslims must sacrifice only cows on Bakrid. The cow is one of the many animals that can be sacrificed on Id.”
“Islam teaches its followers the philosophy of peaceful co-existence, tolerance and harmony. Keeping in view this true Islamic philosophy, many cattle sellers, as well as various madrasas in city, have stopped bringing cows for Id over the past few years,” said Hafez Mohammed Salahuddin Jawed of Madrasa-e-Babul-Uloom.
He said Islam also teaches one to respect the law of the land, and so they have refrained from sale of cows this year.
