Chain snatching case cracked in 25 minutes
High-tech surveillance gadgets at rly stations helped police
Chennai: The high-tech surveillance gadgets installed by southern railway at its stations came in handy once again with the RPF (Railway Protection Force) managing to crack a chain-snatching case in just 25 minutes.
Amudha, an assistant commercial manager of the Trichy division of SR (Southern Railways) who arrived at Tambaram from Tiruchy by Howrah mail, fell victim to chain-snatching aboard an EMU starting from Tambaram. A robber snatched her seven-sovereign chain and jumped off the train as it left Tambaram station around 11 pm.
Amudha alighted at Sanatorium (next stop) and informed the train guard, who summoned the duty constable on the platform. Subsequently, the constable alerted the RPF inspector at Tambaram. Luckily, Amudha recalled the red shirt the young thief wore. All inspector Yelumalai had to do was to scrutinise the CCTV grabs, one of which showed a young man in red shirt alight from the train urgently at 10.52 pm, around the same time Amudha reported that she lost her chain.
Another CCTV grab showed a young man with strikingly similar features (described by Amudha) standing between platforms 7 and 8. The inspector took three jawans to the platform and brought four men for inquiry as they all wore red shirts. Growing suspicious over the one with close resemblance to the CCTV picture, RPF personnel conducted a thorough check and found the gold chain hidden in his undergarments. The whole incident, from the time of snatching to recovery of the chain, ended in 25 minutes.
Further inquiries revealed that the thief, 29-year-old Vinod Kumar of Tirumani in Chengalpet, was unemployed though he had earlier worked in a few companies in MEPZ.
