Winning gold in Asian Games gave me great pleasure, says Mary Kom

The Indian boxer stated that Koreans are cheating in sports across all disciplines

Mumbai: Winning gold at the Asian Games gave me a great pleasure, said Mary Kom in an interview to NDTV on Saturday. Mary, after her Incheon games triumph, became the first Indian woman boxer to win gold at the Asian Games.

The Indian boxer said that the comeback after two years following the Olympic bronze was not easy for her. However, the passion she had for boxing made her work hard and readied her for a return to the boxing ring. She conceded the fact saying that she had to comeback to prove a point. The return to boxing was difficult for her being a mother, wife and a woman, added Mary Kom.

Kom who changed the weight category from 48kg to 51KG, said that fighting in a higher weight category is always tough. But that’s the way it is.

She also spoke about the Sarita Devi incident saying she felt sorry for her compatriot who was cheated at the Asian Games in Incheon. The Manipuri boxer agreed with Sarita Devi’s comment that athletes have to sacrifice a lot; even their family time, as they have to represent the country at the international stage. However, Mary Kom made it clear that she would have not refused for the medal like Sarita Devi did.
