Authorities to conduct counselling of candidate who scored 197.5 cut-off marks for MBBS

Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the authorities to conduct the counselling of a candidate who secured 197.5 cut-off marks for MBBS seat but keep the result of his counselling in a sealed cover until further orders.Justice S. Vaidyanathan also ordered notice to the state government, director of medical education, selection committee, directorate of medical education and Medical Council of India and posted to October 15 further hearing of the petition from M. Ramkumar of Thanjavur. Petitioner’s counsel G. Sankaran submitted that though the petitioner secured 197.50 marks for securing admission in a medical college, he was just below the cut-off mark of 197.75 for OC candidates.
He was likely to get admission in the event of operation of wait list due to non-joining of candidates or increase of number of medical seats on surrender of unfilled Central government quota to state government or approval of any additional medical seats within TN.
For 2014-15, MCI has not granted renewal of recognition for five colleges in TN. On their petitions, the Supreme Court had on September 19 directed them to file an undertaking before MCI and the Union government regarding the compliance of MCI norms within 10 days and on such filing of undertaking, admission will be from the merit list prepared by the state.
The order applies to colleges seeking increase in intake. So, 600 medical seats will be filled up in the state. The medical colleges have already submitted their undertaking but the authorities have not taken steps to conduct counselling for the 600 seats, Sankaran added. Passing interim orders on Tuesday, the judge allowed counselling for the petitioner, but the result may be kept in a sealed cover.
