Tirupur firms join stir
Workers in dyeing and knitwear units showed solidarity
Coimbatore: As the state-wide protests against the conviction of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa continued for the fifth day on Wednesday, workers in dyeing units and knitwear factories in Tirupur and fish traders in Coimbatore joined the stir.
Hundreds of fish stall owners closed their shops on Wednesday in Ukkadam and staged a demonstration in front of the Coimbatore corporation fish market by wearing black dress and gagging themselves with black cloth.
They demanded that Ms Jayalalithaa, who had unveiled so many welfare schemes for the poor and for the development of the state, should be released immediately from prison. The Tamil Nadu Kongu Youth Association members, led by Thaniarasu, staged a demo in front of Coimbatore railway junction, pressing for the early release of Ms Jayalalithaa.
AIADMK trade union members wore black shirts and stag ed a hunger strike in front of Tamil Nadu hotel in Gandhi puram. Hundreds of knitwear and dyeing units were closed in Tirupur, and shops were closed in Udumalpet.
In Erode, 20 AIADMK members tonsured their heads and powerloom workers went on a protest against the special court verdict convicting Ms Jayalalithaa.
