Thevara bus stand to come up by November

The idea is to reduce congestion and give more parking space in the main depot

Kochi: The entire fleet of 40 Thiru-Kochi buses could start operating from the under-construction Thevara bus terminal once it is ready by November, according to Ernakulam District Transport Officer, Madana Mohanan.

“As of now the plan is to shift the entire fleet of Thiru-Kochi buses to the new yard by November 1. The building to accommodate the station master’s cabin and other administrative offices is ready and work has been completed on the three-way garage ,” he said.

The KSRTC is also planning to locate the Kerala Urban Transport Corporation(KUTC), a subsidiary it is setting up to get 400 more low-floor buses under JNnURM, at the new three acre yard. “We’ll shift the low-floor buses operating in the city to Thevara when the KUTC is set up and the new low-floor buses are delivered,” Mr Mohanan added.

Currently, the Thiru-Kochi route is served by a fleet of 60 buses, with each bus running four services a day on average. Of these 20 buses run services to Goshree islands and the remaining 40 are attached to the Ernakulam depot. “The idea is to reduce congestion and give more parking space in the main depot. We’re planning a city unit like the one at Trivandrum in Thevara,” the transport officer explained.
