Rise of apartments changes Guntur’s skyline dramatically

Guntur is the main commercial centre for chilli, tobacco, cotton, tamarind and automobile trades

Guntur: The skyline of Guntur city is changing dramatically, especially after the state capital announcement.

These days, apartments are coming up across the city. At last count, at least 80 apartment buildings were under construction in the city. The builders are spurred by the fact that more and more people are migrating to the city in search of work and they expect certain sales.

Guntur is the main commercial centre for chilli, tobacco, cotton, tamarind and automobile trades. These trades and education and medical institutions provide employment to people of adjacent areas, thus contributing to the rate of migration.

A real estate promoter G. Chandrasekhar recalled that there used to be only a few apartments in the city, that too confined to areas like Brodipeta, Laksh-mipuram, Brundavan Gardens and SVN Colony.

P. Vasudeva Murthy, who given his house for development, said that urbanisation is the reason why people like him are giving their land to builders to build apartments. He said that earlier, developers used to offer 30 percent share of the constructed building to landowners, but now, they are offering 50 per cent of the built up area.

D. Anjaneyulu, a teacher, said, “We have to shell Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 as rent per month for a single portion house. We can rent an apartment for Rs 6,000.”
