Jayalalithaa I-T case adjourned

Madras HC had dispensed personal appearance of Jayalalithaa and Sasikala for six weeks
Chennai: The additional chief metropolitan magistrate court (economic offences-I), Egmore, has adjourned the hearing relating to a case registered against former CM J. Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala by the income-tax department for non-filing of returns, to October 16.
When the matter came up before ACMM R. Dakshinamurthy, her counsel, D. Vairamoorthy, sought adjournment referring the Madras high court order dated September 24, 2014, in which the court had dispensed with the personal appearance of Jayalalithaa and Sasikala for six weeks. The HC also said the I-T department should dispose of the compounding petitions filed by them within the period.
Senior special public prosecutor for income-tax cases, K. Ramasamy, said the SC direction must be obeyed in disposing of the case within a time-frame. He said the defence did not inform the court that they were lodged in a Bengaluru prison.
Vairamoorthy replied that the case had nothing to do with the matter pending before the Egmore court. ACMM Dakshinamurthy said the case posted only for questioning them and answering charges. Their personal appearance had been dispensed with. Under the circumstances, the court was not in a position to proceed further and adjourned the hearing.
