Hong Kong appeal falls short of China

China would not give in to protesters’ demands and wait for mass protests to fizzle out
Beijing: State media insisted on Tuesday said that China would not give in to Hong Kong protesters’ demands for full democracy and would wait for mass protests in the semi-autonomous city to fizzle out. Thousands in the global financial hub have been vowing not to end their street blockades unless Beijing grants them fully democratic leadership elections.
China’s Communist Party leader, Xi Jinping, made no comment on the protests as he offered flower baskets in Tiananmen Square on the first “Martyrs’ Day”, a new holiday to celebrate China’s national heroes.
The commemoration came a day after Xi “appreciated a music concert” in Beijing on Monday, the party’s official People’s Daily newspaper said. Xi was shown smiling, clapping flanked by current Premier Li Keqiang and ex-President Jiang Zemin, who rose to power following a violent crackdown on 1989 pro-democracy protests in Beijing.
