Teenager gets skull bone implant
A 17-year-old college boy whose head was disfigured after a major accident has now got a plastic skull bone
Coimbatore: A 17-year-old college boy whose head was disfigured after a major accident has now got a plastic skull bone implanted at the private Kovai medical centre and hospital in the city.
A portion of the boy’s skull had to be removed to give his brain space and prevent the tissues, blood vessels and cerebrospinal fluid from moving away from their normal position in the skull.
The accident had dealt a physical, cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural blow to the boy. He was suffering from low self-esteem because of his disfigured head. So, a skull bone implant was done with polyetheretherketone, which is both durable and aesthetically pleasing, Dr Suresh Jayabalan, neurosurgeon who performed the surgery, told DC. “The significant loss of bone structure caused by the accident resulted in significant emotional strain on the patient,” the surgeon said.
Traditional methods for reconstructing the cranial anatomy involves bone grafts or other implants. But the disadvantages include inaccurate fits, increased surgical time and infection risks.
Cranial implants made from PEEK plastic are stronger, lighter, biocompatible and reduce operating time, making it an attractive alternative to titanium. With precise customisation and better fit, these implants require less time in surgery and provide greater comfort to the patient.
Having undergone surgery with the most reliable implant, the patient is back to leading a normal life. “Your decision determines your destiny and, in this case, having regained his confidence, the patient is on the road to a renewed life. These implants have delivered the required geometry and precision to obtain appropriate facial reconstruction,” the doctor said.
