Suburbs administration takes a hit

Chairmen in no mood to chair the council proceedings
Chennai: Administration in several municipalities in suburban Chennai has been affected for the last two months. Last month, council meetings were cancelled following the State Election Commission’s bypoll notification and this month, the municipal chairmen of at least three municipalities including Tambaram, Pallavaram and Pammal cancelled the scheduled meeting, citing ‘personal’ reasons.
According to informed sources, the ruling AIADMK chairmen of the local bodies have been shuttling between Bengaluru and Chennai, organising demonstrations against Jayalalithaa’s court verdict and are in no mood to chair the council proceedings.
The Pallavaram municipality had 49 items on its agenda related to road repairs and storm water drain constructions to discuss at a meeting on August 28, but this was called off due to bypoll notification. There were 67 subjects for discussion in September, this meeting too being called off at the eleventh hour.
Pallavaram municipal commissioner S. Ramamurthy contended that there were reasons for these cancellations and that administrative work was not being delayed. The meeting will be conducted next week and the pending works completed before the onset of the monsoon.
Pammal municipal chairman C.V. Ilangovan cited the model code of conduct as a reason for cancellation.“The monsoon will set in next month; there are several preliminary works pending in the new colony and the municipality seems to be in a mode of deactivation,” said social activist V. Santhanam of Pallavaram.
