Disproportionate assets case: Hearing on Jayalalithaa bail plea today

Bengaluru/Chennai: The special vacation bench of Justice Rathnakala will on Wednesday hear the bail plea of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who is in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison after being convicted and sentenced by a special court in a disproportionate assets case.
The judge will hear the bail applications of three close aides of Ms Jayalalithaa, who have also been convicted in the case.

The high court issued a notification on constituting a special vacation bench following the orders of Chief Justice D.H. Waghela. Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, who is representing Ms Jayalalithaa, approached the HC registrar (judicial) seeking an urgent hearing of the appeals filed by Ms Jayalalithaa and three others, Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran.
Meanwhile, Ms Jayalalithaa reportedly refused to meet her successor and TN Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Tuesday, who had come to meet her in the Central Prison.
In Chennai, various associations of the Tamil film industry held a silent fast before the Chepauk Government Guest House to condemn the conviction of Ms Jayalalithaa.
Actors, directors and producers, including Sarath Kumar, T.Shiva, Thaanu, Kunjumon, Ramarajan, Vikraman, J.K. Riteesh, R.K. Selvamani, Bala, Deva, Manobala, Bhagyaraj, Suriya, Karthi, Vikram, Sivakarthikeyan, Prabbu, Vikram Prabhu, Srikanth, Sathyaraj, Vemal, Soori, S.J. Suryah and others took part in the fast. Veteran actor S.S. Rajendhran broke the fast at 5 pm by offering fruit juice to everyone.
