Anantapur is a den of mafia acts
Gangs using city as shelter point to transport heroin
Anantapur: Drug smugglers and fake currency racketeers are using Anantapur as a transit point and a safe haven for the past few years.
The mafia is using the area as a shelter to transport huge quantities of heroin and other drugs to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other cities. Many parts of Anantapur district are being used for fake currency note circulation.
It may be recalled the Anantapur police arrested a 16-member gang and seized 2.5 kg of heroin worth Rs 1 crore. Among them six engineering students from Proddutur in Kadapa district were also involved in the smuggling racket.
They bought the heroin from Obulesu, Sridhar and Nagaraju of Anantapur area. The drug mafia lured the youths promising huge profits. Anantapur and other parts of Rayalaseema region, is a refuge for many, including those from Tamil Nadu using the sea coast for smuggling.
The fake currency circulation is posing a threat for the authorities in the district because heavy financial transactions are involved in the raw silk and silk sari business in Dharma-varam, Somandepalli and Hindupur areas.
An average of Rs 1,000 crore turnover is recorded every year. Several policemen have an alleged role in fake currency circulation in the district. Anantapur SP S. V. Rajasekhar Babu is concentrating on curbing illegal activities of the drug mafia and fake currency racketeers.
“We are constantly keeping a watch through all the police stations to curb such activities,” the SP said and added that youths are involved in the drug business to earn easy money.
