Slum-free city project to start from October 3
As many as 386 houses will be constructed in ground-plus-two (G+2) floors
Hyderabad: Telangana government's dream project of making Hyderabad a slum-free city will be formally launched on Dasara. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will lay the foundation stone for the project at IDH Colony in Sanathnagar on October 3.
As many as 386 houses will be constructed in ground-plus-two (G+2) floors. The government will spend nearly Rs 8 lakh to construct each house with a plinth area of 580 sq.feet. These houses will be constructed like flats having two small bedrooms, a hall and a kitchen. The existing 218 dilapidated houses in the IDH colony will be demolished to facilitate construction of new houses.
Municipal officials have undertaken a survey in 72 locations in the city for implementing the slum-free city project. These houses will be allotted to existing occupants of IDH colony besides slum-dwellers of Parthiwada, Subhashchandra Nagar, Bhagat Singh Nagar and Ammaguda.
The government plans to complete the project within six months at a cost of Rs 37 crore. Chief Minister Mr Rao had announced a slum-free Hyderabad project during Telangana State Formation Day celebrations at Parade Grounds. He had said this project will enhance the ‘brand image’ of Hyderabad and place it among the international cities of the world. Following a request by Sanathnagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Mr Rao visited IDH colony last month and was moved by the pathetic condition of houses.
He immediately announced to take up demolition of these houses and construct new houses in five months. The people were asked to vacate their houses immediately.
The government plans to utilise the funds granted by the Centre under the Rajiv Awaas Yojana to construct the houses, but under the scheme there is no scope to construct double bed-room houses.
The government needs to seek special permission from the Centre to implement the project. The TRS government plans to extend the double bed-room house scheme to the poor in all districts as promised in the election manifesto, replacing Indiramma housing scheme implemented by the Congress government.
Collectors of respective districts have been asked to identify appropriate land for the project and the beneficiaries will be selected on the basis of data collected in the Intensive Household Survey conducted on August 19.
