President Rule imposed in Maharashtra, House suspended

State assembly elections will be held on October 15 in Maharashtra

New Delhi: Maharashtra came under President’s Rule on Sunday as President Pranab Mukherjee signed the proclamation for the imposition of Central rule in the poll-bound state, a day after the Union Cabinet cleared the move.

A special meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Union home minister Rajnath Singh, on Saturday approved the move in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, now in the United States.

Before imposition of President’s rule, Governor Vidyasagar Rao had written separate letters to Shiv Sena and BJP seeking to know if they could form an interim government in the state after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned on Friday.

Mr Chavan had resigned after his government was reduced to a minority as the ally NCP withdrew the support.

Reacting to the Governor's letter, Sena leader Subhash Desai said the party will form a government only when it comes to power with a majority post elections.

It was learnt that a similar letter was sent to BJP leader Eknath Khadse too. However, Mr, Khadse remained unavailable for comment.
