Normalcy comes to Kovai amid uneasy calm on Sunday

Normalcy was partially restored with shops and hotels opening up for business
Coimbatore: A day after the arrest of AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa, which triggered protests by party workers, a sense of uneasy calm prevailed in Coimbatore on Sunday.
Normalcy was partially restored with shops and hotels opening up for business, but the crowded commercial hubs like Oppanakkara Street, Cross Cut Road, Gandhipuram and Ukkadam had very low people movement.
The bigger textile shops and commercial establishments remained open with a group of men staff standing guard at the entrance to tackle any attack. However, the smaller shops had downed their shutters anticipating trouble.
The arterial Avinashi Road, Sakthi Road, Thadagam Road and Trichy Road witnessed less traffic. As it was a Sunday, most of the public too remained indoors, fearing unrest over the arrest of J Jayalalithaa.
While private buses kept off the road, government buses ran in few numbers, that too with skeletal strength of passengers. Yet the long distance buses to neighbouring states of Kerala and Karnataka did not ply for the second consecutive day.
The Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka state owned buses stopped their services for the second day on Sunday from Krishnagiri Although Tamil Nadu state owned buses were on the road, they commuted without passengers as people chose to stay indoors fearing trouble.
Most of the cinema theatres also remained closed and screening of films were suspended in the district.
