College squads to check tobacco abuse

Move to help students overcome addiction

KOCHI: Toc-H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST), at Arakkunnam near here, has formed squads comprising representatives of students and staff to check use of tobacco products and drugs on campus. The aim is to keep the campus free of tobacco and substance abuse.

“In line with the state government’s “Clean Campus, Safe Campus” initiative, the engineering college has launched a mission to prevent the use of drugs and tobacco products among students and is taking measures to help them overcome any addiction,” said college principal Mr D. Vincent H. Wilson.

The squads would frequently inspect the hostel and other places where students stay in groups and would work in tandem with the local police for the success of the mission.

“It is during the adolescence that students tend to get attracted to tobacco products. We have decided to conduct regular sensitisation classes for students on the ill effects of tobacco,” he added.

The local police team, led by Circle Inspector P K Sivankutty, has pledged their support to the mission. An anti-drug abuse awareness session by the circle inspector on the ill effects of drug use and offence of trafficking, and storage of drugs was also organised at the campus as part of the initiative.
