Hyderabad: To lead a heart healthy life, it is very important to walk, cycle, swim or do moderate to intense physical activity for 30 to 45 minutes at least five days in a week.

Walking is considered best for the heart as it allows the blood to circulate freely and every step taken helps build up the heart balance preventing diseases, according to Dr Ramakant Panda, cardio vascular thoracic surgeon.

Retired men who walk more than two miles every day live longer because of the exercise.

Dr Narasimhan, senior electro physiology cardiologist at Care Hospitals explained, “Regular exercise helps hypertensive people reduce their blood pressure.

Ironically, those who are inactive are at a higher risk than those who smoke or whose blood pressure or cholesterol is high. This goes to show that physical activity is a must.”

Dr S. Vijay Kumar Reddy, of Mediciti Hospital, said, “There is a very strong need for proper health education in the public domain.”
