Around 148 illegal immigrants were also arrested
Cairo: Twenty-six militants were killed and 84 others arrested in raids by the Egyptian army in the restive North Sinai governorate during last one week.
"Twenty-six militants were killed in exchange of fire with army in North Sinai and 84 others arrested during the period of September 20 to 27," said spokesperson Brigadier General Mohamed Samir in a statement on Sunday.
He said 148 illegal immigrants were also arrested. The army also destroyed 18 tunnel leads to Gaza used by smugglers, 7 vehicles and 17 motorcycles used by militants in terror attacks against army and police personnel, he said.
North Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since January 2011 Egyptian Revolution that toppled long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak. The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi last year.
Many policemen and soldiers have been killed in the attacks. The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
