Jayalalithaa verdict: No celebrations, orders DMK
Chennai: The DMK was cautious in ‘celebrating’ AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case. DMK president M. Karunanidhi, who was critical in ‘Murasoli’ letters he had penned about Jayalalithaa’s DA case in the past, maintained stoic silence till late evening. His son and party treasurer M.K.Stalin did even better by quickly removing a tweet he had posted about the verdict early evening.
Stalin’s tweet read @mkstalin tweet: “The verdict shows that howsoever high we may be, the law is above us. The law has taken its course and truth has triumphed.” Stalin is no stranger to the business of retracting statements given that he had disowned a Vinayagar chaturthi greeting posted on his official Facebook page barely a month ago.
In fact, Anna Arivalayam gave an instruction to cadres not to celebrate the verdict. DMK leader and lawyer K.S.Radhakrishnan did not mind going on record saying, “Our thalaivar has instructed the cadres not to burst crackers and distribute sweets. “ In the same breath, Radhakrishnan faulted the state administration for being ill prepared to handle the law and order situation in the aftermath of pronouncement of the verdict. “They knew the verdict would be out before noon Saturday.
Whatsoever be the nature of the verdict, should they, administration, particularly home department and police top brass, not have had a plan of action to maintain law and order in the state?” he wondered referring to rampant incidents of stone pelting, burning of buses and attacks on shops across the state. He also criticised that the anger of AIADMK was misplaced as only Subramanian Swamy had moved the court against Jayalalithaa and the then DMK regime acted in conformity with court orders.
