Governor pulls up administration in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: As the AIADMK cadres indulged in violence in several places in the state following the Bengaluru verdict, Governor Dr K. Rosaiah summoned chief secretary Mohan Verghese Chunkat, director general of police K. Ramanujam and Chennai police commissioner S. George to the Raj Bhavan and sought their explanation Saturday evening.
“The officers apprised the Governor of the measures taken to prevent spread of untoward incidents in the state. The Governor instructed the officers to prevent any further incidents and to ensure that law and order is maintained”, said a Raj Bhavan press release.
The court verdict led to violence in many parts of Tamil Nadu as angry AIADMK members stoned buses and forced shops to down shutters. They also burnt effigies of Dr Subramanian Swamy and DMK president M. Karunanidhi. Inter-state bus services were suspended due to the violence. One state transport bus was burnt down in Kancheepuram. The Governor, according to sources, was closely monitoring the situation “through his communication channels and also the detailed coverage done by the TV channels”.
A source said senior colleague O. Panneerselvam briefed Jayalalithaa about the Governor’s concern and his instructions on law and order. She told him to contact all the party district secretaries and instruct them to bring the cadres under control forthwith. The party members, accordingly, were told to refrain from indulging in any violent activities, the source said.
