Power cuts leave AIADMK cadres in dark

Anxious AIADMK cadres were unable to watch television at the party offices
Coimbatore: While the city was awaiting the special court judgment in the disproportionate assets case of Jayalalithaa on Saturday morning, most of the areas of the city witnessed power cuts.
Even anxious AIADMK cadres were unable to watch television at the party offices. Several party cadres were very confident about the acquittal of their party supremo and had sweet boxes in their hands. The power cuts at the crucial time irked them.
Cable TVs were also disrupted and residents in several areas including R.S. Puram, Ramanathapuram, Edayarpalayam, Thudiyalur, Kavundampalayam and Ganapathy. Those with dish TVs, however, managed to watch the news channels for information on the court proceedings. Tension and panic mounted as the verdict was deferred twice, once from 11 am to 1 pm and then from 1 pm to 3 pm when Jayalalithaa was pronounced guilty.
Communication lines also remained disrupted all through the day. Mobile phone lines were jammed and offices were unable to access the Internet. Most IT offices asked their employees to get back home. Hundreds of passengers suffered as they were unable to get private or government buses to return home.
All buses, private and government, were stationed at the depot and passengers who had to get to the outskirts from the city were unable to do so. They sought the assistance of policemen in the area to check if they would be able to get to their place if they managed to hire a taxi or auto. Even as very few taxis and autos plied, they made a field day, exploiting the desperation of people wanting to get back home.
