Coimbatore: Incidents of violence and attempts of self-immolation were reported in several areas on the city outskirts. AIADMK members on bike threw empty glass bottles at the DMK office near Axis bank on Coimbatore road in Mettupalayam. This was about 3 pm when information about Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's conviction started trickling in.
There was no one in the office and the moment this happened, all shops in and around Mettupalayam started downing shutters, said R. Saravana Kumar of the Mettupalayam unit.
An auto driver and an AIADMK member at Pollachi attempted self-immolation before he was stopped and detained by the police. Effigies of DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi were burnt near the bus stand, Gandhi statue and a theatre.
AIADMK supporters in Pollachi slippered and burnt pictures of DMK party treasurer M.K. Stalin. As buses to Udumalpet and Coimbatore kept off the road, commuters who got stranded in Pollachi are being ferried in vans who charged almost double the usual rate. Several school and college students were seen helplessly stranded at bus stops.
