Bengaluru: Its been nearly two months since the 26-member expert committee headed by former law minister, M.C. Nanaiah was constituted to come out with measures for the safety of women and children in the state. But it is still waiting for an office and staff to begin work as the wheels of bureaucracy are as usual proving slow to turn.
Set up on July 30 in response to the public uproar over the spate of sexual attacks on women and children, the committee’s members have not been able to get down to doing their job in the absence of any infrastructure. Despite repeated requests from Mr Nanaiah and other members, the home and finance departments have shown little urgency in the matter 0and are still in the process of providing the committee the facilities it needs.
Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Mr. Nanaiah said the finance department had now given its approval for providing the committee an office, staff and other infrastructure and once the home department gave it the facilities it needed, possibly in the next 10 or 15 days, the committee would be able to get down to discussing the serious issue at hand.
“Without staff or an office it will be impossible to hold a meeting. The home department has to coordinate with other departments to take staff on deputation to assist the committee,” he said. According to sources, the home department is planning to appoint an under secretary on special duty to the committee and has approached the secretary of the Legislative Council to depute an officer for the job.
