Tipper lorry scam: Chief engineer suspended
Mayor P Rajkumar has demanded probe into this matter
Coimbatore: Eight years after three tipper lorries meant for transporting garbage went missing, the corporation has placed chief engineer K.Sukumar under suspension. New Mayor P.Rajkumar had demanded a probe into the tipper lorry scam even when he was the councillor in the erstwhile DMK regime. Now, after the Mayor has taken charge, heads have begun to roll.
Corporation commissioner S. Ganesh suspended the engineer for alleged irregularities in the purchase of lorries used for garbage collection. In 2006, the corporation had sanctioned the purchase of 33 trucks at Rs 5.15 lakh each. These trucks were sent to a firm in Chennai for building the body of the tippers and an audit in 2008 revealed that there were only 30 trucks. And three had just vanished.
After a complaint was registered in 2013 by the civic body, three trucks that looked brand new were produced. Suspecting that they may not be the corporation trucks which are about 8 years old, a team has been sent to Chennai to ascertain if the trucks belonged to the corporation, said deputy commissioner P Gandhimathy. There were several allegations of corruption against K.Sukumar who rose from the ranks as a water meter reading staff to become the chief engineer. He was due for retirement in six months. P.R. Natarajan, executive engineer of JNNURM has taken charge as the interim chief engineer.
