New Delhi: The imposition of President’s Rule in Maharashtra is on the cards after state Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan gave his resignation to governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao on Friday evening.
The governor immediately sent an interim report to the Union home ministry apprising it of developments in the state. The options before the governor are limited, and imposition of Article 356 looks imminent, a senior government official said.
The MHA sought a detailed report from the governor, which is expected to come by Saturday, after which the Union Cabinet will meet to take a final call on imposing President’s Rule in the state.
MHA sources said though Assembly elections have been notified, the governor can seek President’s Rule if the current government loses its mandate. If President’s Rule is imposed in Maharasthra, the state will remain under Central rule until a new government takes charge after the October 15 elections.
