HCU polls: United Democratic Front bags three top slots

UDF ended the rule of the Student Federation of India on the campus

Hyderabad: The United Democratic Front, a year-old union, emerged victorious in the Hyderabad Central University student union election, ending the rule of the Student Federation of India on the campus.

During this election, the UDF bagged three major positions — president, general secretary and cultural secretary. The SFI, which had been sweeping the elections since 2011, bagged the vice-president’s post.

The UDF union, which was constituted in 2013, had won a the vice-president’s post in the previous elections and had an alliance with other unions — Ambedkar Students Association, Dalit Student Union, Telangana Students Front and National Students Union of India.

The HCU election panel said Vincent bagged the president’s position, B. Daniel won the general secretary’s post and S. Lavanya was elected as cultural secretary.

SFI’s Anil G.R. secured the vice-president’s post. ABVP was able to bag two positions — K. Pranav as joint secretary and Ruthvik as sports secretary.

ABVP secured two positions, joint secretary K.Pranav and sports secretary Mr. Ruthvik. While last year’s winners SFI only secured the vice president’s post with Mr. Anil .G.R getting the highest number of votes.

On Thursday, 80 percent of HCU students came out to vote for the student union elections. Four panels were in fray apart from few independents. The SFI, ABVP, The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) consists of NSUI, Dalit and Muslim student groups, and TRS Vidyarthi Sangham.

The dean of students HCU, Professor Prakash Babu said, “Counting of votes will start from 9 a.m. Friday. A panel was constituted by the University, around 30 employees counted the votes apart from that faculty who were observers. The None of the Above option was only for the counselor and representative positions. The elections were held for the posts of president, vice president, general secretary, joint secretary, cultural secretary, sports head and three positions for committee against sexual harassment. That apart also for the post of school representatives and counselors.
