Serpent eagles rescued from the jaws of bird-traders
Coonoor: For the pair of young crested serpent eagles rescued from the jaws of bird-traders here, their journey is set towards Vandalur in Chennai to live their rest of their lives there.Stating that instructions have come from the state forest department to transfer the serpent eagles to the zoological park in Vandalur, Mr.C.Shiva, forest range officer in Coonoor, said that the two crested serpent eagles which were rescued when they were few week old chicks in February in 2013, are now grown up and ready for life at Vandalur.
Saying that the serpent eagle is an endangered avian species, Mr Shiva dwelt on their rescue tale and said Thiruselvan who spotted the eagle chicks in the nest of a serpent eagle built atop a mobile phone tower in Masinagudi, bordering the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, clandestinely shifted the two chicks and handed them over to Rangarajan in Coonoor.
"When they tried to sell the chicks to Lurthurajan residing near Wellington, the chicks were rescued and the trio were arrested in February 2013 for trying to smuggle and trade in the birds. Since then, the serpent eagles have been under the care of foresters. Now they have grown up and look healthy. So, forest higher ups decided to shift them to the Vandalur zoological park. The serpent eagles may start their journey towards Vandalur on Friday evening," he added.
