Billionaire splashes mega bucks!
All the big numbers that make Hong Kong’s Stephen Hung the “world’s biggest spender”
$20 million
Last week, casino magnate Stephen Hung placed the single biggest order for Rolls-Royce cars, buying 30 Phantoms just to ferry guests at a luxury resort he’s building in the global gambling capital of Macau. That number on top is the total bill and the British car manufacturer has acknowledged that it’s the single biggest order they have seen, in a day. The Extended Wheelbase Phantoms will be used for guests at Hung’s “ultra-luxury” Louis XIII hotel, which is scheduled to open in early 2016. Rolls-Royce added that two of the cars will be the most expensive Phantoms ever commissioned, complete with “gold-plated accents” on the outside and interior.
$130,000 a night
That is the price you’ll be paying for a night at Hung’s upcoming “ultra-luxury” Louis XIII hotel, scheduled to open in early 2016. Named after the French king who started building the famed Palace of Versailles, the resort will boast a 20,000 square foot (1,860 square meter) villa billed as the world’s “most extravagant” hotel suite.
$100 million
Guests at the hotel will be able to shop at its boutiques on invitation only. Jewellery ranges from a $1 million to a whopping $100 million and the minimum bet at the tables starts from $650.
$45 billion
That’s the revenue generation Macau’s casinos made last year, making the city the world’s most lucrative gambling market, outpacing Las Vegas seven times over. Businessmen like Stephen Hung are the new names in the running after authorities ended a casino monopoly a decade ago. Hung’s interests now range from property, films and hotels.
Designer clothing
There’s a rumour in Hong Kong that Hung was able to convince the world’s top fashion brands to design his bedsheets and pillow covers making just his bedroom worth a few million dollars. Hung’s wife, Mexico-born Deborah Valdez-Hung, runs a modelling agency is famous locally for driving around in some colourful exotics. “I came from a very conservative family. When I met him I didn’t want him to impress me with anything but his mind,” she said about her 55-year-old husband in an interview to the Wall Street Journal.
