Telangana CM KCR to resurrect 45,000 waterbodies
CM stressed on the need for revival of the chain-link of tanks that existed during Kakatiya and Nizam rulers
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has set a target for officials to restore and recharge 45,300 minor irrigation tanks, lakes and ponds in the state in the coming five years. Mr Rao stressed on the need for revival of the chain-link of tanks that existed during Kakatiya and Nizam rulers.
Addressing a meeting of irrigation engineers here on Thursday, he asked them to restore 9,000 tanks a year from now. He also promised to release Rs 4,500 crore every year; Rs 22,500 crore will be spent in five years for the purpose to ensure that no piece of land in Telangana is prone to drought.
Stating that the watershed development concept was first implemented in the 11th century by the Kakatiya rulers, Mr Rao said that small tanks and wells were deliberately neglected by the Andhra rulers since the merger of Telangana with AP in 1956.
He sought revival of the golden age of minor irrigation in erstwhile Hyderabad state when 20 lakh acres were irrigated by tanks, which have now disappeared due to rapid urbanisation.
