Tasmac staff get go-ahead for protest

Tasmac to observe a protest-fast on October 2 to ban liquor drinking
Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the city police commissioner to grant permission to Tamil Nadu Tasmac Paniyalargal Sangam before September 29, to observe a protest-fast on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Justice V. Ramasubramanian passed the order on a petition from D. Dhanasekaran, state secretary of the Sangam, affiliated to the AITUC, which sought permission to stage a fast and a public meeting at Chepauk Guest House on Gandhi Jayanti day demanding the closure of Tasmac shops.
In the petition he said the association proposed to hold the meeting to create awareness among the people regarding the ill effects of drinking liquor and to bring in prohibition in a phased manner in the state.
He sought permission from the police commissioner and was informed that permission would be granted only in the evening of October 1. In the event of denial of permission at the last minute, it would cause undue hardship and mental agony to the organiser. Hence, he filed the petition.
The judge directed the police commissioner to grant permission to the association before September 29, to hold the fast and the meeting at the venue on October 2.
