Jayalalithaa verdict tomorrow; party supporters expected in city

Special Court functioning in Parappana Agrahara jail premises is hearing a case in which the AIADMK supremo

Bengaluru: The understaffed city police will be on tenterhooks on Saturday. They will have to provide security for the two Champions League T20 matches scheduled on that day, escort Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa from HAL Airport to special court premises at Parappana Agrahara and deal with the fallout after the announcement of verdict.

The Special Court functioning in Parappana Agrahara jail premises is hearing a case in which the AIADMK supremo was accused of accumulating Rs 66-crore disproportionate to her known sources of income, when she was the Chief Minister between 1991 and 96.

Anticipating untoward incidents if the verdict goes against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, the city police have discussed security measures with their Tamil Nadu counterparts. Meanwhile, there are reports that thousands of AIADMK supporters will be landing in the city. Sources said that AIADMK workers from Hosur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and other parts are expected to be present near court premises on Saturday to express their support to their leader.

“It is estimated that at least 5,000 workers would arrive in the city and there are all possibilities that they would take law into their hands if the court order is against the Chief Minister. We are working out measures to deter them coming anywhere close to the court,” a senior police officer said.

However, AIADMK State Secretary V Pugazhendhi told Deccan Chronicle that it was just a court matter and the party had not planned anything for it. Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Alok Kumar said “We have made all security arrangements. Security will be increased at the HAL airport where the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will land and huge number of policemen will be deployed at the court. As many as 40 KSRP, 25 CAR, five Rapid Action Force platoons will be deployed there besides paramilitary forces.”

The hearing will start at 11 am on Saturday. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is expected to arrive at the HAL Airport at 10 am. She will reach the Special Court at the Parappana Agrahara by Road.
