Two BWSSB contract labourers died after inhaling poisonous fumes from a manhole

Bengaluru: Two BWSSB contract labourers died after inhaling poisonous fumes from a manhole located near a storm water drain at Saripalya in Hennur police station limits on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Sridhar, 22, a native of Davangere and Pandre, 25, a native of Bellary.

Police said the Sridhar, Pandre and Chandrashekar were assigned the task of laying a drain pipe connecting the manhole with storm water drain at Thuba Layout in Saraipalya on Thanisandra Main Road.

In order to check the depth of the manhole Sridhar opened its lid, but fell unconscious after inhaling poisonous fumes and fell into the 20-feet deep hole.

Pandre, who rushed to Sridhar’s rescue, too, fell into the manhole. Noticing this, Chandrashekar tried to rescue Pandre, but he too slipped. However, timely help by passersby save him, police said.

They alerted the fire department and eight firemen were pressed to service.

It took nearly half an hour to fish out the bodies and they were sent to Ambedkar Medical College for autopsy.
