Made Snana: Another battle set to begin
Mangalore: After withdrawing the special leave petition related to “Yede Snana,” at the Supreme Court Rajya Adivasi Budakattu Hitharakshana Vedike president Bhaskar Bendodi has decided to approach the High Court with a review petition.
On September 22, the Apex Court ordered that the special leave petition was disposed of as withdrawn. Alarmed by the court vacating the stay on devotees performing the Yede Snana, a modified version of the controversial Madey Snana, that sees people rolling on leftovers on plantain leaves, progressive thinkers have now decided to lobby for a ban on it as well.
Based on a formula chalked out by the government in 2012, the high court had banned Madey Snana practiced by devotees of Kukke Subrahmanya and a few other temples dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya, and approved Yede Snana, in which devotees roll over food offered to the temple deity instead of leftovers.
But opposing government interference in temple rituals, Rajya Adivasi Budakattu Hitharakshana Vedike president, Bhaskar Bendodi, approached the Supreme Court against the order and had it stayed. With the stay vacated, Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagrutha Vedike president, Shivaramu has approached CM Siddaramaiah demanding a ban on the modified ritual as well.
“We do not want either Madey or Yede Snana. Both should be banned. We will hold a padayatra from Mysore to Kukke in October to create awareness on the issue,” Mr Shivaramu said.
But Mr Bendodi insists the government cannot interfere in the religious practices of people.
