Court rejects plea, police to provide security for Jaya case, cricket matches
Bengaluru: Overburdened by bandobast duties on September 27, the city police tried their luck at the special court, hearing the disproportionate assets case of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, requesting it to postpone the verdict hearing to a different date as two Champions League cricket matches have been scheduled for the same day.
Special Public Prosecutor Bhavani Singh told Deccan Chronicle, “Due to the hectic schedule of policemen in the city because of the Champions League T-20 matches, and Ms Jayalalithaa’s disproportionate case verdict, City Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi had requested the special court to postpone the verdict date. But I learnt today (Wednesday) that the police have agreed to provide security at the special court complex in Parppana Agrahara on September 27.”
A senior police officer said, “A circular was issued nearly a week ago that Ms Jayalalithaa’s DA case will be held in the court complex on Parappana Agrahara jail premises and not at the City Civil Court.”
Mr Reddi had cited the two cricket matches, the understaffed city police force and the Jayalalithaa case, whose verdict might have a repercussion across the city, to seek the postponement of the case, but the special court rejected his plea. The verdict hearing begins at 11 am on Saturday.
Mr Reddi told the court, “We had not requested the postponement of date of the TN chief-minister DA case, but we have only asked if the venue can be shifted from Parapana Agrahara to some other place. We will provide security at both the court complex on the Parappana Agrahara jail premises and the cricket matches in Chinnaswamy Stadium.”
