Coalgate: Supreme Court cancels 214 blocks
4 of the blocks that were allocated to different public sector units were not cancelled
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the allocation of 214 out of 218 coal blocks given to various private companies since 1993 in different parts of the country. But four of the blocks that were allocated to different public sector units were not cancelled.
The Supreme Court also directed the companies which were allocated coal blocks but had not operationalised them to pay the government compensation for the loss to the national exchequer.
It accepted the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General, which had come to the conclusion that a loss of Rs 295 per tonne was caused due to non-operation of the mines.
A bench headed by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha saved only four of the blocks, one belonging to NTPC and SAIL each, and two allocated to Ultra Mega Power Projects from being cancelled.
