Assam, Meghalaya floods toll touches 69

24 bodies have been recovered from two sub-divisions Krishnai and Boko
Guwahati: As it was feared, the death toll in the flash floods of Assam Meghalaya on Wednesday jumped to 69 with rescue teams recovering 24 bodies from two sub-divisions Krishnai and Boko, devastated by cloudburst in Garo Hills of Meghalaya on Monday, inundating a vast area of Western Assam. More than 30 people were still missing as survivors started searc-hing for their family members on Wednesday.
Mr Mukul Sangma, the CM of Meghalaya, where 35 people have died, told reporters that the floods were the worst in recent memory, and bad weather was hampering the rescue efforts. He also feared that death toll may go up further as more than 20 people were reported missing in Meghalaya as well.
Informing that more than 10,000 houses were devastated in two worst-hit sub-divisions — Krishnai in Goalpara and Boko in Kamrup districts of Assam, security sources supervising the relief and rescue operations told this newspaper that residents also lost hundreds of cattle in the flood. Several collections centres have been set up in Guwahati to collect the relief assistances.
