India’s Oscar bet

Geetu Mohandas, Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are upbeat about chances
Geetu Mohandas’ Hindi film Liar’s Dice, a road drama about a tribal woman’s journey to find her missing husband, has beaten 29 films to represent India at the Oscars. The movie stars Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.Talking to DC, Geetanjali says, “It was a long route to reach the final line. I hope it is in the final five. I am delighted about the fact that at least people have thought of enlisting us for the Oscars.
“I also never expected Liar’s Dice to premier at Sundance. We were, in fact, fighting to make the film in the first place. Director Geetu Mohandas had to struggle hard to get the funding.” Geetu adds, “I am very happy and excited that Liar’s Dice has been nominated for the Oscars. I chose the subject of migrants. These migrants come from all over and settle down in the Metros. The tragedy is that even though we are talking about globalisation, these migrants have to struggle hard for their very existence. The poor is becoming poorer and is less likely to get proper work.
“This is the journey of a woman. She is a labourer who sets out in search of her husband and meets Nawazuddin on her way… They do fall for each other but it is a mature love
story.
“When I set out to direct this film all I was concentrating on was getting the finances, the right cast and also the script. We never expected to be on the Oscars’ list. It feels great. Also the National Awards and other awards are validation of our hard work. I am not keeping any fingers crossed. We have worked sincerely and the rest is destiny,” she adds.
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says, “Making films like Liar’s Dice will encourage other filmmakers to script great films. I play an Army personnel and the story is indeed touching.
The silent love between the two strangers has been depicted exuberantly. I don’t believe in working in films without good stories and I always ensure that my character is worthwhile. I am excited and happy about Liar’s Dice going to the Oscars.”
