Sania Mirza makes cut

Indian ace qualifies for doubles event at season finale
New Delhi: Sania Mirza and her partner Cara Black confirmed their spot in the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore to be played from October 17 to 26, the Women’s Tennis Association said on Tuesday.
The duo, which won the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo for their second title of the season, join Italy’s Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, China’s Peng Shuai and Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Su-Wei, and Russia’s Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova in the field. The final four teams will be determined based on results at the upcoming tournaments.
“Cara and I are excited to have qualified for the WTA Finals and look forward to the opportunity to compete against the best doubles teams in the world,” said Sania.
“I’ll be making my first appearance at the season finale while for Cara it’s the first time since she became a mother, so we have lots to celebrate already. We are having a great year on the court, and we hope to continue that success with a great run in Singapore.”
Besides titles at Tokyo and at the Portugal Open, Black and Mirza have had runner-up finishes at the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix (Stuttgart) and the Rogers Cup (Montreal). They also had three semifinal finishes at the Miami Open and the Aegon Classic (Birmingham) and eight quarterfinal appearances, including at the Australian Open and the French Open, at Roland Garros.
”We’ll try to win, but it's going to be tough with the eight best teams there,” the Hyderabadi added. “But it’ll also make it even more exciting,”
