Students protest high fees
Group of students meets collector, hands over a petition
Coimbatore: Hundreds of students of two private colleges ghearoed the collector’s office on Tuesday seeking action against their institutions for charging exorbitant fees. The protesting students were led by members of the Students Federation of India (SFI).
The students of Nehru College of Engineering on Palakkad road and Maharaja Institute of Technology at Neelambur squatted in front of the collectorate and shouted slogans seeking to clamp down on institutions that demand high fees.
“These colleges do not collect fees as per the government norms and levy exorbitant amounts. While the norms stipulate fees of '40,000 for B.E. and B.Tech courses, the colleges collect up to Rs 1 lakh without giving proper receipts,” said SFI district secretary R. Deepak Chandrakanth.
A group of students also met collector Archana Patnaik and handed over a petition in this regard. Students of Maharaja Institute of Technology protested in front of the college till late in the evening against sudden closure of the hostel.
“The college management has closed down the hostel without any announcement. Around 300 students, including 100 girls, are left with nowhere to go and are protesting in front of the college,” said Deepak.
The colleges, which were closed after the students rose in protest last week, had reopened only on Monday.
